PowaKaddy Plug 'n' Play batteries: Standard, Extended or XL-Plus?
Updated 5 November 2026
If you have a current PowaKaddy FX, CT or RX trolley, its battery is one of three Plug ‘n’ Play lithium packs: Standard, Extended or XL-Plus. They look the same from the outside, so it’s easy to buy the wrong one for the way you play. Here is how they differ, using only what PowaKaddy publishes.
The three batteries side by side
All three are 29.6V nominal lithium batteries (PowaKaddy calls the system “30v Max”) built with nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) cells, and all three are the same size: 51 x 231 x 165mm. What changes is the capacity, the weight and the trolleys PowaKaddy lists them for.
| Standard | Extended | XL-Plus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 220Wh | 260Wh | 299Wh |
| Weight | 1.56kg | 1.85kg | 2.2kg |
| Listed for | FX and CT ranges | FX and CT ranges | RX, FX and CT ranges |
| Holes (PowaKaddy’s wording) | Designed for 18 holes (FX manual) | 36 holes in normal conditions | Powers the RX1 and RX1 GPS for 18 holes |
| UK warranty | 5 years | 5 years | 5 years, described as pro-rata |
Which one do you need?
On an RX trolley, it’s the XL-Plus. It’s the only one of the three whose product page lists the RX range, and PowaKaddy’s RX Remote page describes an “XL-Plus Plug’n’Play 30v battery system”. PowaKaddy’s batteries page does say all its Plug ‘n’ Play batteries suit the FX, CT and RX ranges, but the Standard and Extended product pages list only FX and CT, so we’d go by the product pages.
On an FX or CT trolley, choose by how far you go. PowaKaddy’s FX owner’s manual says the Standard battery “is designed for use over 18 holes and must always be fully charged before the next round”. The Extended is the one rated for 36 holes, with the caveat that “a long or exceptionally hilly course, wet or soft ground conditions and excessively heavy golf bags may reduce the range”. If you play 18 holes on a hilly or heavy course, or play through the winter, the extra capacity of the Extended gives you a margin even if you never play 36.
The XL-Plus on an FX or CT is listed as compatible, and it has the most capacity of the three. PowaKaddy doesn’t give it a hole rating on an FX or CT, so we won’t guess one.
Note the XL-Plus rating: PowaKaddy’s biggest battery is quoted at 18 holes on the RX1, not 36. The trolley matters as much as the battery.
How they fit
There are no leads to connect. PowaKaddy says the battery “quickly slots into place without the need for fiddly connection wires” and comes out with a release latch, and it stays on the trolley when you fold it. The Standard and XL-Plus pages also mention a top isolator switch with an LED, which “turns off the battery to ensure no discharge when travelling with battery in situ”. PowaKaddy says all three switch off automatically if left unused for 10 hours.
PowaKaddy doesn’t say whether these batteries fit older PowaKaddy trolleys from before the Plug ‘n’ Play system, so don’t assume they do. If your trolley isn’t an FX, CT or RX, send us the model name or a photo of the battery and we’ll check.
Charging
The product pages say each battery “charges within 5 hours”. The FX owner’s manual gives a longer figure, “approximately 8 hours depending on the extent of the discharge and battery capacity”, so allow for the longer time. The manual also says to use only the PowaKaddy charger supplied, to recharge within 24 hours of a round, and not to leave the battery on charge for longer than 12 hours. If you need a replacement, see our golf trolley chargers.
Warranty
In the UK, PowaKaddy gives all three Plug ‘n’ Play batteries a five-year warranty, subject to its terms. The XL-Plus page describes its warranty as pro-rata, and the Standard and Extended pages don’t. Keep your receipt and check PowaKaddy’s warranty terms before you claim.
